Altcoin Season: What It Is and How to Prepare

What Is Altcoin Season?

Altcoin season refers to a market phase where alternative cryptocurrencies (altcoins) outperform Bitcoin. It’s measured by the Altcoin Season Index — when 75% or more of the top 50 altcoins outperform Bitcoin over a 90-day period, the market is considered to be in altcoin season.

Identifying the Cycle

Crypto markets typically follow a pattern: Bitcoin leads the rally, attracting capital from traditional markets. As Bitcoin consolidates, profits rotate into large-cap altcoins (ETH, SOL, BNB), then into mid-caps, and finally into small-caps and meme coins. This rotation creates waves of opportunity across different market segments.

How to Prepare

Build watchlists across different categories: Layer-1 platforms, DeFi protocols, AI tokens, gaming, and infrastructure. Set price alerts at key support levels. Develop a position sizing strategy — never go all-in on a single altcoin. Take profits progressively as prices rise and always keep some capital in stablecoins for new opportunities.
